Join archaeologist James Sainsbury for the Cross Dykes and Deserted Villages archaeology walk at Patching!

Starting in Patching village, this walk will take us across the Downs through the Angmering Park Estate, above the deserted medieval village of Barpham and on to an enigmatic cross-ridge dyke with superb views for miles around

This walk is 5 miles and moderate difficulty.

“We are all extremely lucky to live in an area that not only has outstanding natural beauty, but also outstanding archaeological remains. I hope during these walks I can communicate and share my passion for these ancient places and the peoples who once lived, walked, loved and died within the landscapes we inherited today” James Sainsbury

This year sees our biggest ever programme of archaeology walks with eleven walks taking place between May and September. Six walks take place on Saturday afternoons; the other five will be running on Thursday evenings. New walks this year will explore the archaeology and history of both the Adur and the Arun valleys.

As always James will be bringing along genuine artefacts from the museum collections to give attendees the opportunity to handle items in the locations they were originally found.

The walks are graded by difficulty – some involve more climbing than others! It is advisable to bring water to all of the walks, and lunch to the Saturday sessions. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Thursday walks begin at 18:30 and usually finish by 20:30.

Saturday walks begin at 11:00 and are usually finished by 15:00

£5 per person, places are limited so pre-booking is essential.
