WTM Spotlight - Cinema
As a multi arts and heritage organisation, our cinema programme goes from strength to strength with a wide ranging film line-up as well as Screen Arts events broadcast from around the world. We chatted to our Film Manager, James Tully, to find out all in the world of film.
What’s going on at the cinema?
Loads! It’s a really exciting time for us, as behind the scenes we have been working on technical improvements to the cinema that are finally coming to fruition. The biggest news is that we recently upgraded the projector in the Connaught main house to a 4K laser projector, additionally we have a brand new screen installed as well as 7.1 Surround Sound. This means that films will look and sound sharper than ever before. So when we screen old classics in the cinema we will be able to screen the 4K restorations that the studios work so hard on.
What film projects are you working on?
One of my favourite projects at the moment is the Young Person Film Programmers. Supported by the British Film Institute, we have been working with a team of young volunteers who want to put on a strand of films of their choosing. They decide the films, do the marketing and turn the screenings into events - it’s been a joy to guide them on their journey so far. The hope is that they get a taste of working in the exhibition sector of the film industry to help them in their career decisions. They are called Spotlight On… so please check out their social media and come along to an event soon!
What films should we be excited for this year?
Our film programme has developed over the years I have been working at WTM and we try and programme a wide variety of films including arthouse, mainstream, family, classics as well as live screenings of musicals and theatre events. Over the next few months we have films such as Wes Anderson’s ‘The Frecnh Dispatch’, Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond in ‘No Time To Die’, Christopher Nolan’s next blockbuster ‘Tenet’, Lin Manuel Miranda’s ’In The Heights’ and the return of Tom Cruise in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Make sure to keep an eye out for our regular film brochures to keep up with the latest releases coming to the Connaught and join us on social media to request any films! We love hearing from you.
